OBITUARY

Vernetta Mae Stoakes was born November 18, 1908 at rural Gladbrook, Iowa. She was the daughter of James D. and Mae A. (Stearns) Speirs. Vernetta attended a rural shcool and graduated from Dinsdale High School in 1927. She attended college at Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) and then taught in rural schools.

On May 2, 1936 she was united in marriage to Paul Stoakes of Gladbrook. They were parents of two sons, Edward and Alan.

After her children were in school she went back to teaching. She was a graduate of Drake University having a BA in Education. Vernetta taught a number of years in the North Tama School System. Teaching and working with children was her great love.

Following her retirement she organized the Dinsdale School Reunion and was a member of the American Home and Nature Clubs. She served on the board of the Federated Women's Club , also the board of the Women's Fellowship of the Church. She was an active member of Ripley United Church of Christ. In her spare time she did handiwork, liked to be with family and friends and enjoyed traveling.

Vernetta was preceded in death by her husband in 1973, her parents, two sisters Frances Wood and Irene Speirs, a brother James and a grandson Michael Stoakes. She is survived by two sons Ed and wife Marlys of Traer, Al and wife Ruth of Luverne, MN; six grandchildren who are James, Angela, Kari, Johanna Andrew and Jennifer , and six great-great grandchildren.

Immediately following the committal service, family and friends are invited to a luncheon in the church fellowship hall.
