OBITUARY

Services for Herbert R. Speer, 84, of Buckingham, were held Saturday, Feb. 10, 1990, at 10:30 am at the Geneseo United Methodist Church, Buckingham, with burial in Geneseo Cemetery. Mr. Speer died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 1990, at Plant City, FL, where the couple was spending the winter.

Officiating at the service was the Rev. Robyn Plocher, with LuAnn Pritchard serving as organist. Vocalist was Paul Lindeman. Serving as casket bearers were Keith Speer, Doug Speer, Dennis Mitchell, Craig Speer, Ed Whitmore and Brent Mitchell. Tending to floral tributes were Mrs. Norman Mitchell and Mrs. Brent Mitchell.

Herbert R. Speer was born in rural Buckingham on March 19, 1905, the son of Oscar J. and Florence (Rowser) Speer. He attended country school in Geneseo township and also attended school in Traer. He graduated from Geneseo High School in the class of 1924. He continued his education at Iowa State Teachers College at Cedar Falls, before beginning work at Western Electric in Chicago.

On Octobeer 10, 1930, he married Mary Pitts at the home of her parents in Waterloo, where they then made their home. Herbert worked for John Deere Tractor Company and also for Rath Packing Company. The couple then moved to the Manchester community where they farmed for 11 years, returning to farm the family farm in Geneseo in 1950.

In recent years Herbert and Mary have been wintering in Florida, where Herbert suddenly became ill.

He was a member of the Geneseo United Methodist Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents and one sister.

He is survived by his wife, Mary; two sons, Howard of Ottumwa and Paul of Gastonia, NC and five grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Overton Funeral Service, Traer.
