OBITUARY

A Funeral Mass for Leo R. Donnelly, 82, of Traer, was celebrated at St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer Tuesday morning, Feb. 3, 1998, with the Rev. John Tilp officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. A vigil service was held Monday evening at Overton Funeral Home in Traer.

Leo Donnelly died at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo on Friday, Jan. 30, 1998, where he had been a patient.

Music for the funeral service was provided by Pat Sauer, organist and the St. Paul Church Choir.

Casket bearers were Rob Donnelly, Scott Schellhase, Patrick Donnelly, Randall Kladivo, Tom Kladivo and Brian McClung. Honorary bearers were Mark Kladivo, Glen Kaiser, Cory Schelhase and Louis Kaiser.

Floral tributes were handled by Jennifer McClung, Amy Devin and Carrie Schellhase. Mass cards were tended to by Becky Disney, Kelly Ficken and Laurie Schellhase.

Leo Robert Donnelly was born May 28, 1915, at Garrison, Iowa, the son of Hubert Patrick and Mary Ellen (Kelly) Donnelly. Leo received his education in country school and later at Garrison High School.

On June 7, 1937, he was united in marriage to Gladys Tyler at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Vinton.

On April 21, 1944, he enlisted in the US Navy where he served his country during World War II until his discharge on Dec. 17, 1945.

Leo and Gladys then made their home in Vinton and Garrison, where they owned and operated the Garrison Food Center from 1948 to 1972 and Leo managed the Vinton Liquor Store from 1964 until his retirement in March 1982. In 1984 the couple moved to make their home in Traer.

He was a member of the Geo. G. Harding Post #478 in Garrison, where he held various offices on the local and county level. He was also a charter member of the Knights of Columbus of Vinton; the Holy Name Society and St. Paul Catholic Church in Traer.

He was a past member of the Garrison Fire Department; Garrison School Board and City Council.

Preceding him in death were three brothers, Thomas, Harold and Francis; one sister, Marcella and two grandsons, James Kladivo and Timothy Donnelly.

Leo is survived by his wife, Gladys of Traer; one son, Robert and his wife, Kathleen of Cedar Rapids; four daughters, Kay and Edwin Kladivo and Mary and Don Schellhase, both of Traer, Judith and Michael McClung of McKinney, Texas and Susan Donnelly of San Francisco, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
