Paul A. Altenhein was born on February 18, 1914, at Traer, Ia, son of Roy and Alta [Gates] Altenhein.

He received his education in Traer and graduated in the class of 1931. Paul then began working with Frank Chizek in one of the local taverns. On November 4, 1938, Paul married Gertrude Yohn at Dubuque, Iowa, and they made their home in Traer.

On December 7, 1943, Paul entered the U. S. Army serving his country during WW II and after his discharge on March 22, 1945, he returned home to work as a carpenter with his father and brothers.

In 1953, Paul purchased the Chizek tavern and it became known as Paul’s Place until his retirement in 1974.

Paul and Gert continued to make their home in Traer until November 1981, when they moved to Conrad to be near their son Bruce. In recent months Paul became ill and was a patient at the Veterans Hospital at Iowa City where he died Friday, July 6, 1984, at the age of 70 years.

Paul is survived by his wife Gertrude of Conrad, one son Bruce of Conrad, one stepson Lynn Yohn of Apple Valley, Minn., three daughters, Sandra Barfels of Cedar Rapids; Paulette Stover of Santo, Texas, and Roxanne Hawley of Yuma, Ariz. He is also survived by three brothers, John and Rodger of Traer and Robert of Cedar Falls, one sister Mrs. Ruth Hoeppner, as well as 11 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
