Funeral of J.W. Mason Saturday at Elberon Attracts Large Crowd

Funeral services for Jay William Mason, Oneida township pioneer, whose death was noted briefly in last week’s Star-Clipper, were held at the Methodist Church in Elberon at 2 o’clock last Saturday afternoon, conduced by the Rev. A.E. Coe, of Dysart, assisted by the Rev. Ruth Husband, Elberon pastor, and attend by a large crowd of relatives and friends. The Elberon church choir sang two hymns, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Charles Upah. Six nephews of the descendant, all sons of Fred Mason, deceased, acted as casket bearers. Burial was in the Mason family lot in Waltham cemetery.

Mr. Mason was born northeast of Elberon in York Township Dec. 7, 1871, a son of Luther and Rachel Mason, early settlers, and died Apr. 11 (1936) on the Mason homestead to which his parents moved when he was only two weeks old. Virtually all of his life of 74 years, 5 months, were spent on the same farm.

Mr. Mason married Effie Johnson Apr. 7, 1896. A son, Royal David Mason, who has been home about three months after more than three years of service in the Army, including a long stay in Europe; and a daughter, Beatrice, wife of Everett Callahan, of Dysart, were born to the couple. Surviving with the widow and two children are four grandsons, Russel, Warren, Ivan and Mark Callahan, a one great granddaughter, Deanna Callahan’ also a sister, Mrs. Oris Pryne, of Elberon, and several nephews and nieces. His only brother, Fred Mason, died about 10 years ago.

It was Mr. Mason’s wish that his life might end on the homestead where he spent his life. He was held in high regard in his home community as a kind neighbor, ready to be of help to others.

Relatives and friends from a distance who were at Elberon for the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Bert Stout, of Belle Plaine; Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Whitmore, Toledo; Mrs. John Kresek, Caldwell, Idaho; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Jackson, Mrs. John Boll, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Saver, Frank Saver, Mary Saver, Mr. and Mrs. John Parizek, Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Cherveny, all of Clutier; Mr. and Mrs. Dale Palmer, Dysart; Mr. and Mrs. Guy Monroe and Mr. and Mrs. Raleigh Johnson of Belle Plaine, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Thompson and Mrs. B. Marshall, of Garrison’ Mr. and Mrs. Cecile Bridges and daughter, of Marshalltown; Mr. and Mrs. August Untiedt, of Traer; Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Mason, Montour; Mr. and Mrs. Watson Mason and Elaine and Frank Mason, Toledo; Mr. and Mrs. Purvis Mason and Mr. and Mrs. Dennis Mason of Garwin.
