Benjamin Franklin Smith, son of Charles D. & Mary Ann Cooper Smith, LeRoy Benton Co IA.; enlisted in Co K, 18th Regiment Iowa Infantry. Age 20, years, 5 ft, 11 inches. Complexion-fair, Eyes-blue, hair-brown, born in Ohio. Enlisted 7 July 1862, at Toledo, Tama Co. IA. By-Lt. Murray for a term of 3 years. Mustered into service Aug 6, 1862 at Clinton, Iowa by Capt. Hendershott. Missing in action April 1864, Taken prisoner in Battle of Poison Spring, Poison Springs, Ark., paroled Dec 1864 at New Orleans.
