Son of Fremont Earl and Elizabeth Shortess.

Enlisted May 25, 1917 at Grinnell, IA; entered Camp Cody; transferred to Camp Zachary Taylor; first entered 1st Iowa Cavalry, Troop D.

Mustered out Dec 1, 1918 from Battery B, 5th Reg. F.A.R.D.

Made Corporal July 25, 1917; commissioned Aug 17, 1918. Second Lieutenant
