Alexander Whiteley was born in Kentucky on May 10, 1825 and grew to manhood in the State of Indiana. He married Martha Stewart, the daughter of Moses and Hannah (Halley) Stewart, in Montgomery Co., Indiana on August 24, 1847.
Alexander and Martha began their married life farming in Boone County, Indiana, before making the trek to Tama County, Iowa in the first part of the 1860s. They established a farm in Howard township where the remainder of their family was born.
Alexander and Martha were the parents of seven children: Hannah Elizabeth, wife of Jacob Stineshouer; John, who died at age 2; Charles, who married Mary C Riley in Tama County in 1875 and died two years later; James A, who married Paulina Alice West; Anna M, who married John Mock; Olive, wife of Willis V Amidon; and Florence, wife of Arthur E Newhall.
Alexander passed away in Tama County on December 14, 1891, while his wife Martha lived to age 71 years passing away on July 02, 1898. Both were buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Howard township.
