Betty Sheehan, 78, of Carroll died early Thursday, Feb. 9, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll following a brief battle with cancer.

Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated Feb. 11 at St. Lawrence Church in Carroll. Burial was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

Mrs. Sheehan was born on Sept. 15, 1927, at Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Lewis and Florence (Williamson) Leeper. Her family moved to Nevada, Iowa, where she graduated from Nevada High School. She also had attended school in Wellman, Iowa. Mrs. Sheehan attended Drake University in Des Moines, where she was a drum majorette in the band. She was then employed as a hostess at the Lake Shore Hotel in Clear Lake where she met her future husband. On Oct. 10, 1953, she was married to Thomas J. Sheehan at Nevada, Iowa. The couple made their home in Carroll. Mrs. Sheehan served as Carroll County Deputy Recorder from 1967 until 1982 and served as County Recorder from 1982 until her retirement in 1992. She was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, Carroll Country Club and charter member of the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors include her daughter, Kitty Sheehan and her husband Mark Cuddy of Carroll; granddaughter, Natalie Sheehan Reppa of Carroll; step-grandsons, Cooper Cuddy of Carroll and Zeke Cuddy of Sioux City; brothers, Dave Leeper of Nevada and Bob Leeper and his wife Sandy of Nevada. Also surviving are nephews, Mike, Steve and Jared Leeper and niece, Brittany Leeper, all of Nevada. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas Sheehan, in July 2003; a son, Daniel Sheehan in 1978; and a sister, Janice Egland.
