THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, February 7, 2006.

Hazel Nelson, 86, of Story City, died of ovarian cancer on Sunday, Feb. 5, at Bethany Manor Nursing Home, where she had been a resident since Oct. 18, 2005. Services will at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Elim Lutheran Church in Randall with Pastor Jim Norem officiating. Hazel was born Aug. 12, 1919, the youngest child of Ole Knut and Alice Louise (Torkelson) Helvig. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church and was a 1937 graduate of Story City High School. She attended AIB in Des Moines, then returned to Story City to work at Egenes Insurance and to care for her mother. She married Arvin Jerome Nelson April 4, 1943 and to this union two children were born, David and Susan. While a member at St. Petri, she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir and other vocal groups, and belonged to Ladies Aid and 70 Club. She also belonged to the Story City Woman's Club and was a 4-H leader. She served on the Story City Library Board from 1956-88, belonged to the Bethany Manor Volunteers and was a member of the Story City Historical Society, serving as treasurer for the last 10 years until resigning in August 2005. She had been employed with St. Petri Lutheran Church as its parish secretary and as a bookkeeper at Munsen Chevrolet-Buick. She enjoyed needlework, music, reading, word puzzles and especially jigsaw puzzles. She frequently could be found working a puzzle in the condo common area with her neighbors. Her butterhorn rolls were some of the best around, and her granddaughter surprised her at Thanksgiving by learning to bake them - and grandma said they were very good. She was proud of her grandchildren's accomplishments and was happy to attend both of their college graduations.

She is survived by her daughter, Sue Braland and her husband Marv of Randall; two grandchildren, Scott (Kami) Braland and Ann Braland, both of Aurora, Ill., her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Andy and Trudy Nelson of Story City; two nephews, Don Helvig of Hemet, Calif., and Eric Nelson of Fort Collins, Colo.; and three nieces, Delores Marshall of Reading, Mass., Beverly Doty of Lincoln, Neb., and Barbara Truitt of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her husband in November 1999; her son in April 2004; her parents; three brothers, Earl, Sherman and Palmer; and one nephew, Robert Helvig.

Memorials may be directed to Story City Historical Society, the Elim Lutheran Church choir fund, Bertha Bartlett Public Library, Homeward Hospice of Ames, or Bethany Manor.

Soderstrum Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
