John W. Cleverley Jr., 56, of rural Cambridge, died Jan. 27 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Elkhart. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Church. A Christian Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Peoria Cemetery near Maxwell.

John was born June 4, 1949, in Des Moines, the son of Patricia and John Cleverley Sr. He was the oldest of three children.

John graduated salutatorian of Mingo High School in 1967. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science from Iowa State University in 1971. After graduating from college, John purchased his maternal grandparents' farm in rural Cambridge.

He married Margaret McGill on March 16, 1974, in Colfax. The couple farmed and raised livestock for 32 years. John's greatest loves were raising livestock, watching his children grow and play sports, Iowa State University sports and the St. Louis Cardinals.

He was a scientist and entrepreneur at heart, and loved playing poker. John was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Elkhart, the Farm Bureau, the Cattlemen's' Association, R-Calf, and the Organization for Competitive Marketing.

John is survived by his wife of 32 years, Margaret; his son and daughter-in-law, William and Stacey of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a daughter, Lori, and her fiancé, Michael Kadow, both of Milwaukee, Wis.; his mother, Patricia McCauley of Maxwell; his father, John, and wife, Ione of Mingo; a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Beth Cleverley of Mingo; a sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and Rick Rhoads of Collins; a step brother, Eric Eatwell, and fiancé, Shelli Smith, of Baxter; and a step sister and brother-in-law, Renee and Robert Dukeshire of Carmel, Ind.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Mary's/ Holy Cross Catholic Church, or to the Israel Family Hospice House.

Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell is in charge of arrangements.
