THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, January 18, 2006.

Ferne Marie Demory Stone, born Oct. 16, 1928, near Milo, died Jan. 11, 2006, at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, following a stroke.

The daughter of Hazel Bolton Demory and John Roy Demory, she grew up in Indianola, graduated from Indianola High School and attended Simpson College, Iowa State University and Northeast Missouri State University (now Truman State University), where she received a master's degree in speech pathology. From 1969 to 1984, she was an instructor in the department of speech and communications at Iowa State University.

From the age of 19, she suffered from chronic and severe rheumatoid arthritis. Her determination to overcome the obstacles imposed by this disease, to raise a family, to have a career and to participate in her community set the overall pattern for her life. Its overall theme was her love for family and friends, which was evident to everyone who knew her.

She is survived by one sister, Evelyn Labertew of Indianola; two brothers, Ralph Demory of Indianola and Glenn Demory of Phoenix; four children, John David Stone of Grinnell, Beth Julian of Gilbert, Ariz., Mark Stone of Lawrence, Kan., and Paul Stone of Winterset; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many dear nieces, nephews, relations, colleagues and friends.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 1, at John Overton Funeral Home in Indianola. As an alternative to flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the Arthritis Foundation.
