THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, December 13, 2005.

Earl M. Severson, 74, of Stow, Ohio, died peacefully at home Thursday, Dec. 8. Memorial services were Sunday at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory in Kent, Ohio. A private burial service was in Stow Cemetery in Stow.

He was born April 2, 1931, in Ames, to Howard and Thelma Severson. A U.S. Army Veteran, he served in Germany from 1953 to 1955. He graduated from St. Olaf College in 1953 with a liberal arts degree in education. He earned a master's degree in reading specialization from Kent State University in 1968. He taught for 33 years in the Barberton and Cuyahoga Falls School Systems from 1958-91 primarily as a remedial reading instructor. He was also a part-time instructor at Kent State's Child Study Center.

As an undergraduate, he was a member of the Viking Chorus, which toured the United States and recorded several LPs. Active throughout his life, he was a longtime member of the National Horseshoe Pitching Association and was an avid and talented bowler. He bicycled across Iowa seven times as a participant in RAGBRAI, and around Ohio, in GOBA, three times, all after reaching the age of 50.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Ruth; one son, David of San Diego; three daughters, Diane (Patrick) Mangan of Ann Arbor, Mich., Sheryl (Todd) Dunn of Stow, Ohio, and Joyce (Edward) Groggs of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, and nine grandchildren. Other survivors include two brothers, Herbert Severson of Roland and Duane Severson of Ames; and three sisters, Maxine Thomason of Ames, Elaine Smith of Roswell, N.M., and Juanita White of Gordon, Neb.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Arlin.
