Leon Lloyd Wilson, 88, of Nevada, died Friday, December 2, 2005 at the Hubbard Care Center.
Leon was born August 26, 1917 in Marathon, Iowa, the son of William and Helen Lanning Wilson. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Sandor on July 8, 1943. Leon graduated from Iowa State University where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering and was a three-year letterman in the Big Eight Conference in Baseball. He played Baseball with the St. Louis farm team before joining the Army Corps of Engineers. While in the Corps of Engineers, he worked on several TVA Projects in Oklahoma and Arkansas. He returned to Iowa in 1948 to farm and to take care of his mother. Leon was Story County Master Corn Grower in 1962, having produced 151.9 bushels per acre; the first in Story County to exceed the 150-bushel per acre mark. Leon served as Nevada Postmaster from 1963 until retiring in 1985. He had served as President of Iowa Postmasters from 1973 -1974, President of Nevada Rotary on 1973, and had been a member of Eastern Story County Toastmasters, Saint Patrick's Church, and the American Legion. He and his wife both retired to enjoy their grandchildren. He enjoyed traveling and ISU Sports.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Wilson of Nevada, IA; two sons and daughters-in-law: Mark and Diane Wilson of Nevada, IA, Steve and Rosemary Wilson of Nevada, IA; a daughter and son-in-law: Diane and Mike Dawson of Nevada, IA; 6 grandchildren: Ben and Molly Long, Tom Wilson, Kathryn Wilson, William Dawson, Erin Wilson, Nicole Wilson; 2 great grandchildren: Nick Long, Maria Long; 3 brothers: Ralph (Ardith) Wilson of Minneapolis, MN, Wayne (Jan) Wilson of Ames, IA, Jim (Betsy) Wilson of Pasadena, CA; and 3 sisters: Vera Schreiner of Omaha, NE, Ruth (Wesley) Schonhorst of Slater, IA, Carol (Robert) Alleman of Ankeny, IA; and 2 sisters-in-law: Marilyn Wilson of Kelly, IA, and Virginia Wilson of Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 2 brothers: Floyd and Clyde; and 1 sister, Martha Claveria.
Private family services are planned for a later date.
Bacon Funeral Home and Crematory in Nevada is handling arrangements.
