THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, December 8, 2005.

Vernon White, 87, longtime Rhodes resident and most recently of the Regency Retirement Community in Nevada, died Sunday, Dec. 4, at his home while in hospice care. His death came peacefully at 9 a.m. with his family at his side.

Funeral services and a celebration of his life will be at noon Saturday, Dec. 10, at Rhodes United Methodist Church with the Rev. Jeffrey R. Frese officiating. Burial will be in Eden Cemetery at Rhodes.

Vernon White was born Sept. 4, 1918, near Melbourne, the son of Harry and Martha (Bollhoefer) White. He lived in the Rhodes and Melbourne area until moving to Nevada two years ago. He graduated from Rhodes High School in 1936 and was engaged in farming all of his life.

He married Lucile Huntrods Feb. 28, 1941. He was a member of Rhodes United Methodist Church and had worked with the Boy Scouts and 4-H clubs.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years and four children, Marlys (Dennis) Mitchell of Buckingham, Patricia (Stephen) Johnson of Quito, Ecuador, John White of Rhodes and Carol (Jim) Hornby of Black River Falls, Wis.; 11 grandchildren, Susan (Tom) Burzlaff of Muscatine, Paul (Tammi) Mitchell of Waterloo, Linda (Brian) Horn of Madrid, Robin Johnson (Michael Tavel) of Denver, Colo., Jale (Brett) Kenney of Coos Bay, Ore., Peri Johnson (Omur) Harmansah of Portland, Ore., Vachel White of Rhodes, Emile White of Chandler, Ariz., Amy (Oscar) Uribe of Pflugerville, Texas, Jason Hornby of Milwaukee and Cara (Paul) Gilbertson of Osceola, Wis., and 13 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at the church one-hour prior to the services. For condolences, please visit www.mitchellfh.com. Memorials may be directed to Rhodes United Methodist Church or Homeward Hospice.

Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown is in charge of arrangements.
