Maxwell serviceman killed in Vietnam

Spec. 4 Dick Cuff, 20, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Cuff, Maxwell, has become the second from that community to die in Vietnam fighting.

Cuff's parents were notified of the death of their son Saturday by the Defense Department. Defense officials said Cuff died March 20 of wounds received in combat fire, and that he was serving close to Duc Tho on the China Sea.

Cuff, who would have been 21 next month, had been in service since April 1967 and in Vietnam since December. He had received his basic training at Fort Campbell, Ky., advanced infantry training at Fort Polk, La. and was trained in jungle combat in Hawaii. He had recently returned from the combat zone and had called his parents just two weeks ago from Singapore.

A native of Maxwell, Cuff was a high school athlete, lettering in football, track and baseball. He graduated from Maxwell High in 1965 and attended Ellsworth State College before entering service.

Survivors include his parents and a brother, Corwin, who lives in California.

David Pearson of Maxwell was the first from Story County to die in Vietnam fighting. Charles Graham of Nevada, first reported missing in action, was reported a few weeks ago to have died of wounds received in Vietnam.

Services Sunday for Dick Cuff

Funeral services for Spec. 4 Dick Cuff 20, Maxwell, who died in Vietnam March 20, will be Sunday at 2 p.m. from the Maxwell Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dale Ellsworth, assisted by the Rev. Harold Smith, officiating.

Burial will be in the Maxwell Cemetery with military rites by the Maxwell American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The body will lie in state at the Cooper Funeral Home, Maxwell, from 7:30 p.m. Friday until noon Sunday.

Cuff, who would have been 21 next month, had been in service since April 1967 and in Vietnam since December.

A native of Maxwell, he was a high school athlete, lettering in football, track and baseball. He attended Ellsworth Junior College and Mankato State College before entering service.

Survivors include his parents; a brother Corwin, Granada Hills, Calif. and his grandfather, Willis Evans, Maxwell.

A memorial fund has been established in Cuff's name.
