John was active in community affairs, serving on the Board of Directors of the Collins Exchange Bank and the Bondurant Farmers Coop. He also belonged to the Peoria Cemetery Association, Elks Club and Odd Fellows Lodge. John loved flying and enjoyed many fishing trips to Canada with his friends.
