Obituary of Erick E. Erickson
Erick E. Erickson was born near Lisbon, Ill., Sept. 2, 1860, and died near Carpio, N. D., March 8, 1935, being thus in his 75th year.
He came to Iowa with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Erick Erickson Tjelmeland, via prairie schooner in the spring of 1864. His mother's maiden name was Gjere Okland. They bought a farm about one mile east of Fairview. The estate of Frank Anderson, who was killed in the Civil war, became the Tjelmeland farm, as it is known around here. The farm is still in the Erickson family.
Erick E. Erickson was baptized in the Lisbon Lutheran church by the venerable Rev. P. A. Rasmussen, and confirmed by Rev. Nils Amlund in St. Petri church of Story City. He grew to manhood in our midst and on March 18, 1886, he was united in holy matrimony with his childhood playmate, Karina Erickson, daughter of Tollev and Anna Erickson Savereide.
Mr. Erickson leaves to mourn their loss, his wife Karina of Carpio, N. D.; and children J. E. Erickson and Mrs. Martin S. Egemo of Story City; Mrs. C. N. Anderson of Des Moines; L. E. Erickson, Mrs. Alfred Peterson, Elma Erickson and N. M. Erickson, all of Carpio, N. D.; and Mrs. K. A. Mason, of Sherwood, N. D., being the three son and five daughters now living. One son, Wier M., died in September, 1918 leaving a wife and two children. Two children died in infancy.
Besides the above he leaves two sisters: Julia (Mrs. Erick Johnson) of Lakefield, Minn., and Carrie (Mrs. Ole Wierson) of Roland. He was blessed with 11 grand children and two great grand children.
Immediately after his marriage he established a home and farm in various places near Story City, the the lure of the great Northwest was too much for him, so he packed up all his belongings and moved to Carpio, N. D., in the spring of 1907, where he reared his family to manhood and womanhood; he acquired considerable land and was prosperous and doing well, but the continued drouth and general depression made some unpleasant moments in the later years of his life.
The funeral was conducted from the Vaagen church by his pastor, Rev. Borlaug. He was laid to rest in the Vaagen cemetery by the side of his departed children and near the home that he established over 28 years ago.
The pall bearers were Dan Danielson, Joe Einerson, Nils Skaar, Hjelmer Magnussen, E. Anderson and John Eide.
The writer of this has known Mr. Erickson from childhood, and will always remember him as an unassuming man and one who loved the truth and could be relied upon all things. He was always faithful and true to community, state and church. His father's and mother's training in the Lutheran faith was near and dear to him. The dread disease cancer, developed early in his ailing and he knew his demise was not far off, and was resigned to his fate; glad to meet his Redeemer.
