OBITUARY
Nels Jensen was born in Denmark, August 19, 1835, and passed to his eternal reward at the home of his son, John N. Johnson, May 2, 1921, aged 85 years, 6 months and 23 days.
He was married to Miss Ane Jensen-Miller May 2, 1863, in Denmark. In 1870 he and his wife and two children immigrated to America, coming directly to Story City. Here they resided five years, when they moved to the farm near the Center schoolhouse which was their home until the death of Mrs. Jensen several years ago.
Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Jensen, namely John N., Mrs. Anna Mathison, Martin N. and Charles C., of this place, and Julius N. of Freeport, Ill. All the children are living and were present at the funeral, except Mrs. Mathison, who has been ill.
The deceased was one of those big hearted pioneers who by hard work and personal sacrifices transformed this western country from a wilderness to a rich agricultural region; devoted to his family, kind to his neighbors and always ready to lend a helping hand.
In early youth he was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church, in which faith he passed to his reward. He had been gradually failing, yet for one of his age had been in fair health up to within a week of his death. May his life's work and influence be a continued blessing to his loved ones who remain.
The funeral services were held in the Grace church on May 5, Rev. Wendel of Van Horne officiating in the absence of the pastor of the church. A large concourse of old-time neighbors and friends, beside a host of relatives, attended the funeral and bore eloquent testimony of the esteem in which the departed was held.
SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Some of Nels/Niels Jensen's children used the surname "Johnson" and some used "Jensen."
