THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Thursday, October 27, 2005.

A memorial service for Gladys M. Heghin of Emmetsburg will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg with the Rev. Steve Ellerbusch officiating. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, in Story City Municipal Cemetery. Gladys died Tuesday Oct. 25, at Lakeside Lutheran Home in Emmetsburg at the age of 97.

Gladys M. Johnson Heghin, daughter of J.C. Johnson and Louise Robertson Johnson, was born Dec. 29, 1907, in Story City. She was a graduate of Iowa State University with degrees in home economics education and journalism.

She taught home economics in McCallsburg Consolidated Schools, was the county home economist for Black Hawk County in Waterloo and was the women's editor for Successful Farming magazine in Des Moines.
She married Staff Sgt. Lewis A. Heghin Nov. 7, 1943, in Camdenton, Mo. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev. S.S. Heghin, the groom's father.

Lew and Glad's first home was in New Orleans, where he served as staff sergeant at the LaGarde General Hospital. After his discharge from the service, they moved to Minneapolis where Lewis C. was born. After several moves, they made their home in Fairfield in the early 1950s and later moved to Lake Crystal, Minn. In 1968, they moved to Emmetsburg where Lewis took over as first administrator at Lakeside Lutheran Home.

Gladys was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Sarah Circle and W.E.L.C.A. in Emmetsburg and a member of P.E.O. Chapter K.K. She belonged to the Friday Club for 25 years and served as chairman of the Lakeside Lutheran Home Auxiliary.

Throughout her life, she was a 4-H judge in Jefferson County and was a contributor to the Minnesota Prairie Electric Publication as well as the Iowa R.E.C.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two brothers; and one sister.

She is survived by one son, Lewis C. Heghin of Cylinder, as well as many other relatives and friends.
