TWO PIONEERS CALLED BY DEATH

INGEBRIT EGGLAND AND LARS L. BAKKA ANSWER SUMMONS PAST WEEK

This community has lost two of its prominent citizens the past week, Lars L. Bakka having passed away at the University hospital at Iowa City Saturday morning, and Ingebrit Eggland at the home of his daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Grove Sunday evening. The latter had attained the age of eighty years, while the former was 61 years at the time of his death.

Lars L. Bakka

Lars L. Bakka was born on April 19, 1864, at Saude, Norway, his parents being Lars Larson and Mary Flogstad Larson. His parents immigrated to America when he was an infant a few weeks old, settling in Illinois, where they lived for two years and then moved to the farm 2 1/2 miles west of Roland where the deceased grew to manhood.

When he was 24 years old he went to Graettinger where he was engaged in farming and business until 1903, when he returned to Roland, and purchased the old family homestead, which he farmed until about nine years ago. At that time he moved to town and purchased the local hardware store which he conducted for six years, when he sold the business to the present proprietor. About a year ago he again entered business, erecting the Lincoln service station, which he was conducting at the time of his death.

On July 15, 1891, he was united in marriage to Hannah Malinde Sandvig, to which union five children were born, of which Gordon Silas and Marjory Louise, died in infancy. The three who are living and are left with their mother to mourn his loss are Henry, Laura and Gordon, all of this place, the two latter staying at home. He also leaves one grandchild, Dean Michael Bakka, and five brothers and one sister, C. B. Larson of Wallingford, Martin of Boulder, Colo., Louis B., Knute B., and Nels Larson of Dickey, N.D., and Miss Lena Bakka of Roland.

Mr. Bakka had not been feeling well for several months, but the seriousness of his ailment was not realized until about three weeks ago when he went to Iowa City to undergo an operation, when it was found that his case was so far gone that nothing could be done to relieve him. It was hope that he would recover sufficiently to come home again, but death intervened, and claimed him about four o'clock Saturday morning. The body was brought home Monday evening and funeral services were held from Bergen church, of which the deceased was a faithful member, Tuesday afternoon, Rev. M. O. Sumstad officiating. A large number of relatives, business associates and friends were gather to pay respects to the deceased. The remains were laid to rest in the Roland cemetery.

Those from a distance at the funeral were, Messrs and Mesdames H. O. Torkelson, T. H. Torkelson, L. J. Mathre, H. Knudsen and Hans Torkelson, Mr. and Mrs. O. K. Helvig and daughter, Hazel, Miss Maggie Omundson and Lars Omundson of Story City; Mrs. Elizabeth Faerland, of McCallsburg; Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Sandvig, Miss Evangeline Vitek, Carl Sandvig and Chas. Johnson of Marshalltown; Pete Sandvig of Iowa City; Miss Lena Bakka and K. B.
