TWO CALLED BY DEATH PAST WEEK

MRS. SVEN O. HOLLAND AND ROBERT RASMUSSON PASSED AWAY

Two deaths occurred in our community within the past week, Robert Rasmussen northeast of town last Saturday morning, and Mrs. Sven O. Holland at her home in Roland on Monday evening. Mr. Rasmussen had been ill for about six weeks, with diabetes, while Mrs. Holland, who was almost 85 years old, had been feeling about as well as usual having done up her housework for the day when she was suddenly stricken and passed away. After washing the supper dishes she sat down in a chair, and her husband and son, Henry Holland, who were in the room with her, noticed that her head fell back and rushed over to her, tired to call to her and arouse her, but nothing could be done to bring her back to consciousness. The cause of her death was general debility due to her advance age.

Mrs. Sven O. Holland

Gjori Hilgesdatter Holland was born in Etne, Norway, Europe, on January 3, 1839, and was a daughter of Hilge and Gjori Holland. On June 27, 1861, she was married to S. O. Holland to which union eight children were born. The first years of their married life was spent in Norway, until some over forty years ago they came to America, coming directly to Roland, being the first emigrants to travel over the Story City branch of the M. & St. L. Railroad. They lived on farms southeast of town for a number of years, moving to Roland some over twenty years ago where they have since resided. In 1911 they celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage and in 1921 they celebrated their sixtieth anniversary. Mrs. Holland was one of our oldest residents, if she had lived until January 3rd she would have been 85 years old. Of eight girls in her family, she was the last survivor.

Besides her aged husband, she leaves to mourn her death four sons and one daughter, two sons and one daughter having preceded her in death, they being Mrs. Henry Heggen and Tollef Holland of Cambridge and George Holland of Radcliffe. Those living are, O. McClellan of St. Paul, Sam Holland of Hanska, Minn., Tom Holland of Waterloo, and Mrs. Amond Thompson of Roland. She also leaves thirteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted from Salem church tomorrow (Friday) afternoon at 2:30.
