S. S. Sydness Obituary

The last rites for S. S. Sydness were held Saturday, Oct. 29, with Rev. S. T. Nelson officiating in the home at 1:15 and in the St. Petri church at 2 p.m.

The large congregation present sand "Rock of Ages Cleft for Me" and two vocal solos were rendered, first "Den Store Hvide Flok" by Rev. Nelson and "I Know of a Sleep in Jesus Name" by Mrs. Robert Kenney. The casket bearers were: Martin and T. Z. Henryson, Osmund Mortvedt, Howard Anderson and Otis and Henry Thorsbakken. Interment was in the Story City cemetery.

Those from a distance attending the funeral of S. S. Sydness included Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Blunt and daughter of Charles City, Mrs. Julia Stole, Mrs. Gunder Roe and Mrs. J. S. Sydness of Minneapolis, Mrs. P. C. Peterson of Deer Creek, Minn., Mrs. P. J. Hansen of Chicago; Mr. and Mrs. Dick Heggen, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Smith, Miss Betts Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Sakarias Holm and family, all from Des Moines; Mr. and Mr. Arthur Thorsbakken of Alden; Gladys Knutson and Mr. and Mrs. Ansel Mortvedt of Ames; Leslie Henderson of Nevada; Mr. and Mrs. Dwight Cartwright of Boone, and many from Randall and Jewell.

Rev. Nelson read the following obituary:

OBITUARY

Sakarias S. Sydness, the son of Sakaraias and Guri Sydness, was born at Fjelberg, Sunnhordland, Norway, June 2nd, 1873. He came to America at the age of 17 years and first made his home with his siter, Mrs. Martha Henryson of Story City.

Mr. Sydness mad two trips back to Norway. On his second trip he was united in marriage to Sarah Arnevik at Stavanger, Mar. 16th, 1909. Four children were born to this union.

Since coming to America as a young man, Mr. Sydness has spent his time farming in the Story City vicinity. With his family he had been a faithful member of the St. Petri Lutheran church here.

He had been in failing health for more that a year, and passed away at the Iowa Methodist hospital October 26, 1949, at the age of 76 years, 4 months and 23 days.

Two brothers and three sister have preceded him in death.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife; two sons, Sanford of Rumsey, Alberta, Canada, and Harold, at home; two daughters, Margaret (Mrs. Richard Blunt of Erie, Pa.) and Thelma, (Mrs. Carmen Lombardo) of Des Moines, five grandchildren, Beverly, Peggy and Clive Blunt; Thomas Sydness and Steven Lombardo; one sister and two brothers in Norway and three sisters in America; Mrs. Betsy Thorsbakken of Story City, Mrs. Christina Pederson of Deer Creek, Minn., and Mrs. Julia Stole of Minneapolis.

Throughout his illness Mr. Sydness maintained an attitude and spirit of cheerfulness, though he know medical science could not stay his illness.
