MRS. MARY LANE DIED SUNDAY

Well Known Former Story City Woman Was Buried Here Tuesday

Mrs. Mary Lane (nee Johnson) passed away shortly before noon last Sunday at the Iowa City university hospital, at which place she had undergone an operation last Thursday forenoon. The operation had been undertaken as a last resort, on the chance that her ailment was not cancer, which however it was, and death was inevitable.

The body was brought here and the funeral held at the Grace church Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Bergeman officiating. The Bergeman sisters sang "Jesus Lover of My Soul" and "Rock of Ages," with another sister at the piano. The pallbearers were six nephews of the deceased. Interment was made in the Fairview cemetery.

The pastor read the following obituary:

Obituary

Mary (Johnson) Lane, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morten Johnson, was born in Story City on January 11, 1973, and after 62 years she passed on to her eternal reward on last Sunday, August 18, 1935. Her end was deliverance from suffering and was peaceful. Thus we are once more reminded that this is not man's home and that has no abiding place here.

Having been in her usual state of health until in recent months, no one anticipated her end to be so near. She began to realize that her health was failing and since she was living alone in Des Moines, she was unable to give herself proper care, consequently she was brought to Story City to be with her daughter and family, Mr. and Mrs. Iver A. Egenes, where she received the best of care and medical aid. Her condition grew rapidly worse and upon advice of her physician she was taken to Iowa City for treatment. She submitted to a surgical operation last Thursday, when it was discovered that her condition was hopeless and after lingering until on Sunday, shortly before the noon hour, she passed quietly away.

Born in Story City

She grew to womanhood here in Story City and on April 22, 1893, she was married to Stark K. Svenson and to them were born three children, of whom one died in infancy. After their marriage they lived for a short time at Story City and then moved to Chicago. After 15 years of happy wedded life great sorrow cam into this home when the husband and father was taken by death in 1908. She continued her residence in Chicago for one more year and then moved to Story City. In 1920 she was married to Mr. Wm. Lane, who died about ten years ago. During this latter period of life she had her resident in the city of Des Moines for 16 years, or until coming here last month.

It was during the pastorate of Rev. C. D. Wendel, in 1916, when she united with Grace Evangelical church, of which she was a member at the time of her death. Realizing that seriousness of her condition and anticipating that the end may not be so distant, she gave evidence of being fully resigned to whatever God had in store for her, and requested once more to commune with the Lord in observance of the Holy Supper. She also requested that in the event of death no flowers be purchased as a floral tribute to her memory, consequently the family is contributing $10.00 to Missions in memory of mother.

She is survived by her two children, Mrs. Iver Egenes of Story City and Earl Swenson of Commerce; two brothers, Mathias Johnson and John M. Johnson of Story City; three sisters, Mrs. Pete Paulson and Mrs. Ira Doolittle of Story City, and Mrs. John P. Johnson of Kalispell, Mont. Also her stepmother, Mrs. Morten Johnson of Breckinridge, Texas, 2 half-sisters and 4 grandchildren, besides other relatives and a host of friends.
