Gene Stanly Roberts was born April 3, 1944 in Ames, IA to George and Stella Roberts. He attended Milford Township School through the 11th grade after which Milford consolidated with Nevada. There he graduated in 1962 and met Kathy Watson. Gene attended the University of Iowa for one semester where he played the tuba in the U of I marching band. He and Kathy were married in 1964 at Nevada Memorial Lutheran Church.

He worked for Layne-Western Well Drilling Co. for over 20 years. When he retired from there he began farming and doing custom hay baling. He was a member of Story County Farm Bureau.

Gene was currently a member of Salem Lutheran Church in Roland, IA. He had been a member of Bergen Lutheran Church for 45 years where he was Sunday School treasurer for 30 years. He was on church council at both churches and sang in the church choirs, including in Fredericksburg Texas where he and Kathy wintered for the past 23 years. He was fond of the hill country of Texas where he felt right at home with his cowboy boots and hats. His heart was also with Pleasant Grove Church, rural Ames, where he enjoyed mowing and cutting trees in the new addition of the cemetery. He was on the Pleasant Grove Cemetery Board.

Gene could fix most anything including semi-trucks, cars, farm equipment, household appliances, kids toys and whatever Kathy brought to him. He enjoyed God’s beautiful outdoors, playing cards, dominoes, watching westerns, especially Gunsmoke, Andy Griffith, and Wheel of Fortune.

Gene passed away peacefully from ALS on November 16, 2023 at the age of 79.

Surviving him are his wife, Kathy, Story City, Sons Brian Roberts, Sebastapol, CA, Scott Roberts, Ankeny and daughter Angie (Dan), State Center, daughter-in-law, Jennifer Alkire, Santa Rosa, CA. Grandchildren Malorie Roberts, Santa Rosa, CA, Zachary Roberts (Ashley), Rohnert Park, CA, Kaylee Dunlap (Zac), St. Ansgar, IA and Chevy Dunlap, State Center, one great granddaughter, Arwynn Roberts, Rohnert Park, CA, brothers Larry Roberts (June), Ocala, FL and Jim Roberts, Las Vegas, NV, a sister, Georgia Pierson, Kerrville, TX, sister-in-law Barbara Roberts, sister-in-law Sally Roberts, brother-in-law Keith Watson (Pam) and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Richard Roberts, sister-in-law Alice Roberts, brother-in-law Richard Pierson.
