Nels Bjelland, youngest son of Johannes and Valgard Bjelland, was born in Sunde, Norway on Sept. 15, 1904 and died eight days before his 72nd birthday. At the time he was visiting friends and relatives in Iowa, accompanied by his brother-in-law, Olav Bjelland.
Nels was baptized and confirmed in Husnes Lutheran Church in Norway.
Mr. Bjelland immigrated to the United States in 1927 and lived in the States until 1972. At that time he returned to live with his sisters in Norway.
He spent some of his 45 years in the U.S. working in Chicago but came to Iowa in 1930 during the depression.
He spent his time working on farms and then took up the carpenter trade. As he went along he gathered friends, both young and old.
He had a good memory and ability to enjoy his surroundings. He was especially fond of fishing, catching bullheads on a lake in Minnesota thrilled him as much as getting a salmon in Norway.
He is survived by a brother, Knut Bjelland of Cambridge; three sister, Misses Barbara and Hannah Bjelland and Mrs. Olav (Bertina) Bjelland, and brother-in-law, Olav of Sunde, Norway; also three nieces, two nephews, 11 great nieces and nephews; and hosts of friends in U.S. and Norway.
