Services Held for Dr. Geo. J. Severson

A large group of relatives and friends gathered Tuesday afternoon for the funeral services for Dr. Geo. J. Severson at 2 p.m. at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Rev. John Ness was officiating pastor, weaving into his sermon a tribute to the long-time service of Dr. Severson in many areas of community activity.

A violin solo was played by Miss Rebekah Johnson of Ames, Nilus Ihle sang "Rock of Ages." a favorite hymn of Dr. Severson, and George Person of Mendota, Ill., a nephew of Dr. Severson, sang "The Lord's Prayer." Each was accompanied by the organist, Mrs. Alvin Lund.

Pallbearers were Roger Engen, Arnold Larson, Byron Anderson, Gary Severson, Allan Severson and Richard Severson.

Honorary pallbearers were William Harmon, Frank Roznos, Tom Dunlap, Carroll Tweedt, William Sharpnack and Lowell Soderstrum.

Mrs. H. J. McHone and Mrs. Roland Swanson cared for the floral tributes.

Interment was in the Bethehem Cemetery at Slater.

Obituary

Dr. George J. Severson was born on Feb. 10, 1881 at Cambridge, Ia. to John and Nicolina Severson. He passed away at the Iowa Lutheran Home in Madrid, Sunday morning, Feb. 20, 1972 at the age of 91.

His childhood was spent on a farm and later he attended an academy in Dixon, Ill., and taught school for two years. He then enrolled at Drake University in Des Moines for his professional training.

He began the practice of medicine at Blairsburg, Ia., before moving to Slater in 1910 where he continued medical practice until 1948.

In 1909 he was married to Minnie Larson and to this union were born five sons: Gerrish of Forest City, Eugene of Huxley, Stanley of Des Moines, Wayne of Slater and George of Coulter. His first wife died in 1952. In 1955 he married Amanda Ostrem. Besides his wife and sons, he is survived by a brother, Albert, of Modesto, Calif., a sister, Carrie Person of Mendota, Ill.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Rebekah Johnson of Ames and Mrs. Flora Landis of Haddonfield, N. J.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Six brothers preceded him in death.
