OBITUARY.
Olaf A. Newman was the son of the late Olaf Newman, Sr., and Carrie Marie Newman, who came from Sweden in 1868 and settled at what was then known as Swede Point, and that vicinity has been the family home ever since.
Mr. Newman was born in Sweden May 10, 1855 and at the time of his demise had attained the age of 84 years, 5 months and 7 days--a ripe old age. For more than 70 years Mr. Newman has been a resident of the Madrid community, the largest portion of which was on a farm in Garden Prairie township, where he became one of its outstandingly successful farmers.
On the 29th of April, 1891, Mr. Newman was united in marriage to Miss Hulda Alsin and unto this household three children were born, namely: Ivan, Mabel Victoria and Oliver. Mrs. Newman passed away Jan. 2, 1926 and two of the children, Ivan and Mabel Victoria, also preceded him in death.
He is survived by one son, Oliver, and three grandchildren, Robert, Jerrol and Marilyn Mae. One brother, Peter T. Newman, and one sister, Sarah Newman, also preceded him in death.
Mr. Newman was baptized a Lutheran, confirmed in the year of 1871 at the St. John's Lutheran church of Madrid by Rev. Mr. Hokanson, first pastor of that church. It might be of interest to add that only one older confirmand survives Mr. Newman. He is Jacob Jacobson of Formosa, Kan., who was a member of the same class.
Mr. Newman entered the Lutheran Home for the Aged Dec. 1, 1935 and there spent the declining years of his life in comfort. His last illness was of short duration, although he had been failing for some time.
