THOR LANDE WAS BURIED SUNDAY

Funeral attended by an immense throng. Rev. Vangsness of Story City in charge.

The death of the Thor Lande, and aged citizen of Huxley, took place Thursday morning, August 30th, at his home in Huxley. Deceased had been failing for some time, in fact he had been in poor health in years, and demise on Thursday morning had been fully expected. Funeral took place Sunday afternoon from his late Huxley home and the Fieldberg church where a very large audience had gathered to pay the last tribute of respect to a man whom they had learned to love.

Deceased was born in Norway on March 29, 1835. The early years of his career were spent in the community of his birth where he grew to manhood. In the fifties he accompanied friends to America and soon adopted the country as his home. At the outbreak of the hostilities between the North and South, prompted by a spirit of patriotism and love for the country he had only a short time before adopted as his own, he joined the Federal army, shouldered the musket and went to the front.

After the war was over he returned to the quietedness of farm life and began the development of the piece of land he had bought to be his own. It was at this time that he took unto himself a life companion* and who remained constantly with him, sharing life's sorrows and joys, till last May when she preceded him into the other world. They made the farm their home till a few years ago when they moved to Huxley where they have since resided.

While a resident of Polk county Mr. Lande was as well known in southern Story where he had his church affiliations with the Fieldberg congregation. He had a wide acquaintanceship and had the highest respect of all who knew him. Whatever he had to do he did quietly and in a practical way. As a pioneer he took part in many things that are now a part of history, both in church and private life. He was an ardent church worker and died a christian.

*SUBMITTER'S NOTE: Sarah/Siri Sydnes married Thor Lande 17 September 1866.
