Luther Severtson Fatally Injured

Luther Severtson, prominent farmer living north of Slater, was kill in an unusual accident at the Reynoldson Stock Yards in Ames Friday morning, Dec. 9.

Mr. Severtson was having some cattle weighed before loading them out. He was standing behind the gate in the alleyway when the cattle hit the gate, causing it to swing back, hitting Mr. Severtson and knocking him to the cement platform.

The attending the physician said that Mr. Severtson died almost instantly from a fractured skull.

Services.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 1:30 in the Riis Funeral Home here and from the Bethlehem Lutheran Church at 2 o'clock. Rev. Leo O. Bjorlie was in charge and chose John 6:68 as his text.

Robert Weeks sang "Behold a Host" and "God Be With You Till We Meet Again." Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Accola sang "No Night There." Mrs. Robert Newman was the organist.

Mrs. Albert Lehman and Mrs. Howard Weeks arranged the many beautiful floral tributes. There were also many gifts to worthy causes in memory of Mr. Severtson.

Pallbearers were Lloyd Eveland, Roy Halverson, Lewis Sheldahl, Raymond Eveland, Thomas Weeks and Clarence Gregg.

Interment was in the Slater Cemetery, south of town.

Obituary.

Luther Severtson was born at Slater on Aug. 6, 1897 and passed away at Ames on Dec. 9, 1955, at the age of 58 years, 4 months and 3 days.

His parents were John and Malinda Severtson, who preceded him in death.

He was educated in the Slater Schools and was baptized and confirmed in the Lincoln Lutheran Church at Slater, later joining the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where he was a member at the time of his death.

On Feb. 2, 1926 he was married to Minerva Storing and to them three children were born: One son, Gene LaVerne who died in infancy, and two daughters, Betty Jean and Carol Ann.

Throughout the years he was a faithful and devoted husband and father. He was active in church and community affairs. Mr. Severtson's friendliness and helpfulness will be missed by many who knew and loved him.

In addition to his immediate family, he leaves two grandchildren, David Craig and Dawn Lynn Grulke; four sister, Inger Powell, Ella Satre; Bertha Warren and Julia Severtson; one brother, George Severtson.
