Harold Dean Coombs was born Sept. 8, 1924, in Dows to Ralph Coombs and Erdene Unger Coombs. He attended country school and graduated from Dows High School. He married Beverly Shillington Nov. 29, 1945, at her parent's home. Together, they farmed north of Dows their entire married life until he retired in 1996. To this union two children were born, John and Nancy.
Harold and Bev moved to Ames in 2001 to be closer to the dialysis center. Even with his failing health, he remained a farmer at heart. He was devoted to his family, which included seven grandchildren.
He served on the Franklin County ASCS for a term. He was a lifelong member of the Dows United Methodist Church, where he served on the board. He also was a Drainage District trustee.
He is survived by his wife, Bev; one son, John (Beverly) of Latimer and their children, Jennifer (Brian) Schwartz, Jill, Andy, Amy and Laura; and one daughter, Nancy Tamashunas and children, Sara and Michael.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
The family suggests memorials be sent to United Methodist Church in Dows, Calvary Methodist Church in Ames or the American Diabetes Association.
