John Alexander McFarlan was born in Schenectady Co. New York, May 19, 1828 and died at his home in Gilbert, August 18th. Mr. McFarlan enlisted in the 18th New York Heavy Artillery at Schenectady N.Y., Feb. 1864. He served with distinction in the position and was discharged at Washington August 25, 1865 after which he did picket duty and hospital work for some time. He was married to Jane N. Hannay of Schenectady county on the fifth of Feb. 1852. On Mar. 4th 1868 he moved to this county where he has since resided. He was an earnest christian and was always interested in church work and many times traveled a great distance in order to be at church services. He was a charter member of the first Presbyterian church of Gilbert in which he was a great worker. Mr. McFarlan was of a generous disposition and very affable. In the early part of April he was remarried and since that time has lived at Gilbert Station. Before this last union he made his home with his daughter in this city and while here he made numerous friends. He was conscious up to the end and died saying, "My life is completed, thank God for care over me thus far." The Grand Old Army Boys of this city had charge of the funeral services which were held Monday in the First Presbyterian church at Gilbert, Rev. W. D. Herr, pastor of the Congregational church of this city preached the sermon and the remains were laid to rest in the Gilbert cemetery. He leaves a wife and four children to mourn. The children are Neal McFarlan of Westfield Iowa, Mrs. W. H. Nelson of this city, T. Scott, M.D., Tuscon, Arizona and Mrs. Dr. G. G. Clark of Ogden. The bereaved friends have the sympathy of the community.
