OBITUARY OF A. J. GRAVES
Pioneer Ames Man Called to His Heavenly Home.
Ames, Feb. 20.--Andrew J. Graves was born at Sherburne, Vt., Oct. 18, 1830, and died Tuesday evening, Feb. 7, 1910, at the home of his son, south of town. He resided in Vermont until he was 23 years of age and from there he went to California to engage in gold mining, returning to Vermont in 1857. He moved to Cedar Falls, Iowa, the next year, where he was united in marriage to Mattie M. Meredith, Aug. 30, 1858. Three children were born to this union, Edwin H., Frank J. and Zebina K. Mrs. Graves died May 11, 1908, Frank J. died Feb. 16, 1909, and Zebina K. died May 13, 1909, leaving but one son, Edwin H. Mr. Graves was highly esteemed for his excellent character by his many friends in Ames and throughout Iowa. He was appointed superintendent of the college farm, March 1864, continuing at the college until 1869. He has been president of the Ames Savings bank since it was organized and was president of the Story County Mutual Insurance company at the time of his death, Mr. Graves was a charter member of Arcadia Lodge 249, A. F. and A. M. The funeral services were held at the residence and were conducted by Rev. W. J. Minchin, of the Congregational church. The funeral was met at the Northwestern station by the Masonic lodge who escorted it to the Ames cemetery where the Masonic service was conducted and interment made.
