OBITUARY

DEATH OF LARS MATHISON.

Lars Mathison, one of the oldest of the Dane residents of the county and an elder brother of Jens and Bartle Mathison of this city, died at hsi home in Nevada Saturday morning after an illness which had lasted for several weeks. Indeed when he moved to town about the first of last December from his farm in Grant township he was in failing health his decline had bee quite steady since. He had been confined to his bed for about three weeks, and the end was not unlooked for by family and friends.

The deceased was 73 years of age and a native of Denmark. He grew up in the old country, served in the Danish army in the Holstein-Schleswig war of 1864, married there and had one son when with his little family in 1871 he emigrated to the United States. He came at once to Story county and located first in Story City, where he lived for a time, and then he resided for three or four years in Nevada. About 1880 he bought a farm near McCallsburg, where he lived for about ten years, and then sold that farm and bought another in Grant township, which continued his home until very recently. Last fall he bought the Daugherty place on Walnut street and moved to it to spent the rest of his days in Nevada.

He leaves a wife, five sons and two daughters, all of them grown and all but one married. The sons near home are Petr and Thos. and the daughters Mrs. Allen Baumgardner and Mrs. Harvey Lough. Other sons, Mathis from Minnesota and John from Illinois, were home for the funeral but the eldest one, Martin, is in Seattle and too far away. The funeral was conducted Monday afternoon from the Lutheran church by Rev. Shirck.
