Centenarian Died as Result of Fall Injuries
State Center, Sept. 8--Mrs. Nancy Vanderveer, reputed to be one of the oldest residents of Marshall county, died at her home in Melbourne at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the age of 101 years. Mrs. Mary Conger, a member of the Iowa Soldiers Home at Marshalltown, who was 101 last Marsh, is believed to be the only person older than Mrs. Vanderveer, who was born June 10, 1837.
Mrs. Vanderveer was injured in a fall from her chair last July and her health failed rapidly since that time.
Mrs. Vanderveer was born in Montgomery county, New York when Martin VanBuren was president of the United States. She lived in Iowa since 1881 when she came to State Center, when her husband died in 1911, and she then moved to Melbourne. She was married to T. J. Vanderveer in 1861 when Lincoln was president and her husband enlisted in the Union army but did not see actual service in the Civil war.
Her two children, Miles Vanderveer, 73, and Miss Roba Vanderveer, 68, had made their home with their mother.
Until her recent injury, Mrs. Vanderveer enjoyed remarkable health for one of her age. On her 100th birthday in 1937 she received more than 100 visitors during the day and apparently was none the worse for the excitement of the event. Last June on the 101st anniversary she again received more than 100 callers without fatigue.
