Funeral Rites Held Wednesday For John J. Sketoe

Nevada relatives, with many friends were in Elkhart Wednesday in attendance of the funeral of the late John J. Sketoe, 74, who died at his farm home near that place Monday evening which were held at the Elkhart Church of Christ Wednesday afternoon at 2:30, after which the body was laid to rest in the Elkhart cemetery.

The services were in charge of Rev. C. V. Pence, pastor of the Nevada Church of Christ, assisted by Rev. Mrs. Green of the Elkhart Church of Christ.

John J. Sketoe, a son of Joseph and Sarah Sketoe, was born October 2, 1864, at Batavia, in Jefferson county, Iowa. Spending his boyhood in that community, he came to Elkhart as a young man and for several years he taught school in the neighborhood.

He was married October 20, 1889, to Virginia Shultz of the Elkhart community and their home had generally been in and around Elkhart, with the exception of a short time spent in Nevada. Two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Sketoe they being Winnie, now Mrs. Ed Tillotson, and Anna, now Mrs. Alba Mills, both of Nevada. They, with the wife survive the father. Besides these and the three grandchildren and one great grandchild he leaves two sisters, Mrs. Jane Brown of Omaha and Mrs. Sadie Boydel of Batavia, both of whom were at his bedside at death.

He became a member of the Church of Christ when a young man and was faithful to this faith throughout his life. He found much comfort in that faith and in the word of his Master, according the members of the family. He was a kind and loving husband and father and thoughtful and generous neighbor and friend and as such he will be long kindly remembered.
