David V. Smith Collins Pioneer Died Wednesday

Special to the Journal:
Collins, April 14--David V. Smith, 83, another of the pioneers of this community is dead. He passed away Wednesday at his home here from complications incident to his advanced age.

Born at Springfield, Illinois, August 10, 1854, a son of Phillip and Lucinda Smith, as a small lad he came with his family to Jasper county. They settled first on a farm south of Newton and there he lived for number of years, but came north into Story county as a young man and here he was married on September 12, 1883 to Victoria Bates.

Seven children were born to them. Two died in infancy and one did after reaching young manhood. The four who with the wife survive Mr. Smith are Oran Smith, Miss Pearl Smith, Mrs. Eva Carver and Elmer Smith, all of Collins. He also leaves a sister Lola, widow of the late Ellsworth Gibson of Maxwell, as well as numerous grandchildren.

He had been a resident of Collins for 37 years and here he was well known and highly respected. He was a member of the United Brethren church and the funeral services will be held in that church Saturday at 1:30, with Rev. Neel of the Collins Church of Christ in charge Burial will be in the Collins cemetery.
