Funeral Rites at Hauges Church for Severt O. Houge

Slater, March 10--Funeral services for Severt O. Houge were held Monday afternoon at one-thirty o'clock at the Houges Lutheran church. The services were in charge of his pastor, Rev. John Loland, who used a part of the 90th Psalm as his text.

The many beautiful floral offerings were in charge of Misses Edna and Letta Houge. Homer Lewis sang "No Night There," as a solo. A double quartet composed of Rev. and Mrs. J. Loland, Mr. and Mrs. Weir Sydness, Miss Opal Sydness, Arnold Sydness and Ella Mae Carlson sang "It Is Well With My Soul." Walter Christopher sang a solo, "The Last Mile of the Way."

The pall bearers were Noel and Carroll Christopher of Sheldahl, Walter Christopher of Huxley, Henry Stenson of Roland, George Engstrom of Waterloo and Jeffry Houge of Slater. Burial was mad in the old Sheldahl cemetery two miles north of Slater.

Severt O. Houge was born on a farm in Palestine township, Story county, February 4, 1858 and died at his home in Slater, March 3, 1938 at the age of 81 years and 1 month. He was baptized, confirmed and married by Rev. Osmond Sheldahl of Sheldahl.

His parents were Ole and Valborg Houge. His marriage took place in 1882 to Miss Christina Hill. Two children were born to this union, a son Knute, who died at the age of two and a daughter Lena. They also have a foster son Ergen Stenson. From 1890 to 1906 they made their home on a farm near McCook, Nebraska. They later moved to Slater where MR. Houge conducted a shoe shop for a period of ten years. He was an active member of the Hauges Lutheran church and served as a member on the board of deacons and other church offices. He was a devoted husband and father and a friend to everyone.

Fourteen dollars to be used for Inner Missions was presented to the church by Mrs. Houge and daughter Lena and a group of relatives.

He is survived by his wife and daughter, Miss Lena Houge, and foster son Ergen Stenson of Wilmot, S. Dak.

He also leaves three brothers: George of near Kelley; Anfin of McCloud, N. Dak., and Joseph of Slater; one sister Mrs. Mary Christopher of Jackson, Minn., and a host of relatives and friends.
