Thomas Thompson Funeral Services Held In Roland

Funeral services for Thomas Thompson were held at Salem Lutheran Church in Roland May 29 with the Rev. Everett Nelson officiating. The Rev. O. Holen of Ames spoke briefly to the family.

Pursel-Davis Mortuary of Marshalltown was in charge. Morris R. Whitehead and Judy Twedt sang "Rock of Ages" and "Saved by Grace."

Thompson died May 27, 1962 at the Story City Hospital where he had been a patient for seven weeks.

Casket bearers were grandsons, De Lon Thompson, Darwin Meyer, Sterling Thompson, Richard Thompson, Larry Harrendorf and greatgrandson, Bradley Thompson.

Interment was in the Roland cemetery.

Life Sketch

Thomas Thompson, son of the late Torres and Sarah Thompson, was born in Olen Bergen, Norway, April 18, 1869. He came with his family to the states in a sailboat in 1871 at the age of two years. He was baptized in Norway and confirmed in the Salem Lutheran Church in Roland by the Rev. C. C. Holter.

He was a member of the Salem church for the past 20 years. He was married to Josephine Brekke February 16, 1901 in Roland. They farmed for 10 years near Roland and then moved to a farm south of McCallsburg where they lived for 23 years. They retired and moved to Roland.

At the death of his wife, he made his home with Judith, his daughter and son-in-law, Oscar Chelsvig, for the past five years. He also worked at the carpenter trade. He lived continuously in Story County for 91 years.

His survivors include five sons, Julius of McCallsburg; Mauric of Roland; Earl of Ames; Herman of Ottumwa; and Francis of Maxwell. Also four daughters, Mrs. Oscar (Judith) Chelsvig of Roland; Mrs. Clifton (Myrthe) Harrendorf of State Center; Mrs. Oren (Bernice) Meyer of Marshalltown; Mrs. Earl (Lillian) Bernard of State Centr, 28 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Malinda Osmundson of Minneapolis, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine, December 22, 1954 and one son, Sanford, March 27, 1951 and a granddaughter in 1941.

Relatives and friends attended the funeral from Mora, Minnesota, Long Beach, California, Klemme, Clear Lake, Iowa Falls, Marshalltown, State Center, Cedar Rapids, Maryville, Missouri, Ottumwa, Union, Chester, New Providence and surrounding towns.
