THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Wednesday, August 17, 2005.

Larry Poling, 71, of State Center, died Sunday, Aug. 14, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. His death came peacefully at 8:37 p.m. with family at his side. Memorial services and a celebration of his life will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at Mitchell Family Funeral Home with the Rev. Keith McDonald of State Center Presbyterian Church officiating. There will be a time of fellowship and refreshments immediately following the services in the hospitality room of the funeral home. Private family burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in State Center.

Larry Poling was born on Oct. 25, 1933, in State Center. He was the son of Kenneth and Cleo (Stock) Poling. He married Lois Speer on Jan. 11, 1953, in State Center. They shared 52 1/2 blessed years together. Not only was Lois his wife, she was also his best friend. He graduated from State Center High School in 1951. In 1970, he went to work for the Business Men's Assurance Company. He worked very hard and earned his college insurance degree as a Certified Life Underwriter. He graduated from American College as a Charted Life Underwriter. He received more than 30 awards and trips and was a member of the Million Dollar Round Table, where he sold a million dollars in insurance in one year. He also was a representative and sold investments for ING Financial partners and sold for Wellmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Iowa.

He was a member of the State Center Presbyterian Church for more than 50 years where he also served as an elder, the State Center Fire Department, served on the State Center City Council eight years, the State Center Lion's Club as a 40-year member and starred in the movie "Miles From Home" as Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, starring opposite of Richard Gere and Kevin Anderson. Larry was a member of the State Center Fire Department for 15 years.

He was a fond supporter of the State Center community, an avid Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball fan, enjoyed the Chicago Cubs, was a Master Gardener and shared with many. He took great pride in making his yard look perfect. He was very involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren and cherished them all.

Left to celebrate his life are his loving wife Lois, his children, Lynn Poling of Georgetown, Texas; Lance (Mandee) Poling of Lago Vista, Texas, Linda (Ralph) Gibbs of Colo and Luann (Dennis) Clatt of Colo; his precious grandchildren, Ashley Kristine Gibbs, Brittany Nicole Gibbs, Tanner James Clatt, Jacob Hadley Clatt, Lance Preston Poling, Alexandra Leigh Poling and Taylor Ashlyn Poling; and siblings Jerry Poling (Katie) of State Center, Allyn (Jeanette) Poling of Fremont, Neb., Sharon Abbas of Grundy Center, Kenneth Jr. (Penny) Poling of Maplewood, Minn., Carolee (Dennis) Volker of New Hampton, Rick Poling of Minneapolis and LeaAnn Hitchings of State Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Gary, in infancy.
