Richard (Dick) Squires, 95, formerly of Ames, died Saturday, Aug. 13, in North Fort Myers, Fla., due to heart failure and complications from leukemia. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 25, at the Ames Friends meeting, 121 S. Maple St., and on Saturday, Oct. 8, in Fort Myers, Fla.
Dick Squires was born Oct. 21, 1909, in Zanesville, Ohio, the second of five children of Walter and Edith Lombard Squires. He married Janet Harris Oct. 8, 1932, in Richmond, Ind.
He graduated from high school in Richmond, Ind., obtained a bachelor's degree from Purdue University and a master's degree from Yale in mechanical engineering. He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and was active in Friends Meetings in Radnor, Pa., Ames, Stuart, Fla., and Fort Myers, Fla.
He first worked as a plant inspector for insurance companies and then as a plant engineer for the National Publishing Company of Philadelphia. In 1956, he took a teaching position at the college of engineering in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where he eventually was promoted to dean. Upon his return to the United States, he joined the faculty of engineering at Iowa State University, where he taught until his retirement in 1976. His career at ISU included a one-year posting to Prairie View A& M. During the summers, he sometimes did consulting work for the Northern Pacific Railroad and in Tunisia for Stanley Engineering.
Following his retirement, he taped countless books for the blind, served on the board for Story County Housing Association and traveled extensively in Europe, Russia, Australia, South Africa, South America and many other places.
He is survived by his three children, Dr. E. C. (Heidi) Squires of Laconia, N.H., Sarah (Dan) Beane of Garwin and Barbara (Dave) French of Fort Myers, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one brother, Lombard Squires of Naples Fla.
He was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers; and one sister.
