Oldest Barber Is Called By Death

Special to the Journal.
Zearing, Dec. 9--H. P. Chandler, 73, Story county's oldest barber and for over thirty years a resident of Zearing is dead. "Chan" heard the call "next" and he took his place.

Born in Ohio. February 7, 1852, he came to Story county as a babe and lived with his people over in Grant township. He grew to manhood in that part of the county and was married to Lucy Grout.

Later he moved to Union in Hardin county and there entered the barber trade, which he followed the balance of his life, in later years having the distinction of being the oldest barber in the county.

He worked four years at Union, then went to Radcliffe, later to Story City and finally came to Zearing where he had lived for 22 years. His last days work was a full Saturday from early morning until midnight.

On April 28, 1901 he married as his second wife Mrs. David who passed away Nov. 10, 1923.

Mr. Chandler belonged to the K. P. and Modern Woodman lodges. He held his church membership in the Eldora Methodist church. He was always in his place regularly in the Sunday school class and services of the Evangelical church of Zearing. Not long ago he presented the church with two fine offering plates in memory of his wife.

Mr. Chandler always kept a clean shop. He was optimistic and his cheery disposition was a help to his fellow men.

He leaves to mourn his departure three sons and a daughter, Carl of Pueblo, Jess and Mrs. Daisy Larson of Colorado Springs and Hartwell Junior of Zearing. Five children have died, fourteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Also five step-children, Will Davis of Davis City, Dan, Clay and Harry of Colorado and Mrs. Violet Reed of Zearing and thirteen grandchildren. Also two sisters, Mrs. Murphy of Wellman and Mrs. Stephen Sunier of Iowa City.

He passed away Thursday, Dec. 2, at the abe of 73 years, 9 months and 25 days.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 5 at one o'clock at the house and 1:30 at the Evangelical church. Burial was at the Zearing cemetery.
