HENRY STRATTON

COLLINS -- Funeral services were held at the Christian church Thursday afternoon for Henry Stratton. Rev. William Steven of Washington officiated with Rev. Robert McDonald assisting.

Music was furnished by Florence Mead, organist and Mary Tomlinson, soloist, singing "Whispering Hope" and "Rock of Ages." Flowers were cared for by Doris Smith and Esther Carver.

Casket bearers were Tom Stratton, Wayne Clapper, Wilbert Clapper, Ralph Stratton, Ronald Stratton and Jack Stratton.

Interment was in the Ashton cemetery six miles south of Collins. Coopers of Maxwell in charge.

Obituary

James Henry Stratton, son of James and Mary Stratton was born on a farm three miles south of Collins in Jasper county, Iowa, Jan. 6, 1870, and died at the Story County Hospital, where he had been a patient nearly three weeks, on May 4, 1959 at 4:48 a. m. aged 89 years, 3 months and 28 days. He died on the 68th anniversary of his wedding day.

He lived at home on the farm of this parents and at the home of his grandfather and grandmother Streeter during his boyhood, receiving his education at the Harsh rural school.

On May 4, 1891 he was married to Rachel Priest and they established a home on a farm in Jasper county. With the exception of one year he spent his entire life in and around Collins. The one year was spent on a farm south of Maxwell in the community where his wife was born and reared.

Five children were born to this union, all of whom are living. They are Frank of Collins, Ethel (Mrs. Ervin Holmes) of Clemons, Millard E. Stratton of Long Beach, Calif., Mildred (Mrs. Arthur Paul) of Collins, and Esther (Mrs. Stanley Warren) of Des Moines.

In 1903 he moved his family into Collins and remained thee until the children were educated and had established homes of their own. During these years he was employed ------- ---- the time in the store of C. C. Chambers. In the spring of 1933 Mr. and Mrs. Stratton moved to their farm southwest of Collins and he was actively engaged in farming since.

In the early years of his life he identified his faith by joining the Methodist Protestant church. He was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America for 61 years, serving as secretary and treasurer for 28 years. He took an active part and fulfilled many tasks in building the Collins community.

Besides his children twelve grandchildren survive namely: Winfred, Roland, Wendell and James Holmes, Yvonne Crabb, Bonnie Boechel, Doris Flosaf, Colleen Johnson, Norman Stratton, Shirley Mills, Maizie Lord, Margie Breen and one step grandson, Stanley Warren.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Rachel, a sister Mary Elsie Clapper, a half brother Gene Beard and a half sister, Mary Eva Beard.

After the death of his wife, Sept. 15, 1946, his daughter, Mildred and husband, Arthur Paul have made their home with him.
