Pioneer of State Center Community Dead

State Center, Oct. 4--Nathaniel Brown, 81, a resident of Marshall county for more than 61 yeas, died at his home in State Center at about 2:00 o'clock Friday afternoon, having been sick only since Tuesday. Death was due to heart trouble.

He had been in usual health until he became ill Tuesday while looking after affairs at his farm south of town. There was much improvement noted in his condition Thursday, but Friday morning there was a change and the end came with his daughter attending him.

Mr. Brown was born June 20, 1856, at Monongahela, Pa., and came to Marshall county in the spring of 1876,, where he lived continuously with the exception of five years spent in Plymouth county. When he first came here he worked for a time on the farm of his uncle, Wm. Rahn, near Melbourne. Afterwards he live on several places finally settling on the one south of State Center, where he lived until he retired in 1917 and moved to town.

He was married in State Center April 20, 1881, to Miss Althea Triplett, who died about 10 years ago.

Mr. and Mrs. Brown were the parents of 14 children, 11 of whom are living, Mrs. Edith Jackson, Long Beach, Cal.; Clayton Brown, Marion, Ia.; Mrs. Ella Jackson, El Cajon, Cal.; Gilbert Brown and Harry Brown, Pike Road, Ala.; Mrs. Josephine Marlow, Ames; Kessiah Andrew, Albany, Ore.; Rebecca Brown, Grand Rapids, Mich.; Miss Zow Brown, State Center; Miss Avis Brown, Long Beach, Cal.; and Harry [should be Howard] Brown, State Center.

The body was taken to the Wensel funeral home where it will remain until Saturday Funeral services will be held at the M. E. church in State Center today. Rev. Bruce D. Jones, the pastor, and Rev. Fred A. Smith of Green Mountain, former pastor, will be in charge. Burial will be made in Hillside cemetery.
