Last Rites for Ben S. Hammond

Funeral services were held in Nevada Saturday, Nov. 26, at the Ryan Funeral Home for Ben S. Hammond, resident of Story county for the past 15 years, who passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Grace Morris in Nevada where he had made his home for the past three years.

The service was in charge of Rev. Charles E. Winn, assistant pastor of the Pentecostal Evangelical church of Marshalltown. The music was furnished by two grandchildren of the deceased, Mrs. Delores Gebers of Iowa City and Raymond V. Shawstad of Marshalltown.

Casket bearers were six of the grandsons who carried the body to its final resting place in Warren township cemetery at McCallsburg. Burial was by the side of his wife. Pall bearers were Lloyd Hammond, Spencer Hammond, Dean Hammond, Raymond Shawstad, Robert Prescott and Douglas Olson.

Benjamin Stoddard Hammond, son of Dennis and Hannah Hammond, was born December 11, 1860 at Riverside, Iowa where he grew to manhood. His death occurred in Nevada November 24, 1949, at the age of 88 years, 11 months and 13 days.

He married Carrie Ann Davis who preceded him in death, nine years ago, January 25, 1940. For many years they made their home on farms in Minnesota, Missouri and Iowa.

He was baptized in the Christian faith, uplifted Christ to all knew him. He was a patient, kind, loving man and possessed a testimony of a victorious life in Christ.

He leaves to mourn his passing eleven children, twenty-four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

The children are O. C. Hammond, Albert Lea, Minn.; R. B. Hammond of Radcliffe; Nyle Hammond, Brainerd, Minn.; I. J. Hammond, Nevada; Mrs. Grace Morris, Nevada; Lee Hammond, Wausau, Wisconsin; Mark L. Hammond, Reinbeck; Mrs. Bernice Budlong, Brainerd, Minn.; Albert R. Hammond, Kanawha; Mrs. Ruth Ostendorf, Marshalltown, and Mrs. Luella Carter of Minneapolis, Minn. All the children and their families were in attendance except two, Mrs. Luella Carter and Ivan Hammond who were unable to attend.

Other out of town relatives in attendance were Mrs. A. Alme of West Conrad, Minn.; Mr. and Mrs. George Repp and Mrs. Spencer Phillips of Perry, Mrs. Joe Summerson of Dawson, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Klockentager of Minburn, Mr. and Mrs. Max Hammond of Columbus Junction, Howard Hammond, Mrs. Wood and Miss Lillian Hammond of Des Moines, Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Olson of Iowa City, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Norgin of Radcliffe, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hammond of Estherville and Miss Catherine and Charles Craig of McCallsburg, Mr. and Mrs. Mark Morris and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Prescott of Nevada were relatives in attendance and in addition were a host of friends.
