John Backous Was Laid to Rest at Cambridge

Cambridge, Jan. 7--Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2:00 for John Backous in the United Brethren church, Rev. Thomas Zike in charge. The church was filled with relatives and friends who came to pay their respects to one who had been business associates for many years. Born in Yorkshire, England, he came to this country when a young man. Honest and industrious he made his own way in the new world. He leaves his wife and one daughter Mrs. Harry Harker. One son died in young manhood. Mr. Backous, aged 73, was ill but ten days, a victim on pneumonia. Interment was in the local cemetery.

John Backous was born August 1, 1863 in Yorkshire, England and died Jan. 1, 1937 at Iowa sanitarium, Nevada being 73 years and 9 months of age. He was sick only 10 days.

He and his brother Will came to America in the winter of 1882 and in three years his father and family came but leaving one sister in England.

He was a son of George and Elizabeth Backous. On June 22, 1891, he was married to Emma Netterfield. To this union two children were born. Floyd passing on Jan. 7, 1922. Leverne and two grandchildren, John William and Leverna Naomi of Cambridge.

Mr. and Mrs. Harry L. Harker stayed by him as far as possible and all was done in the power of their hands.

He was a man of home loving and glad to have the children with him. He was baptized and converted in his church at England. He was a man of honest, industrious and upright character, and was respected by all.

He leaves beside his wife and daughter, three sisters and three brothers. They are Mrs. Emma Lunn of England, Mrs. Geo. Chevill of Rhodes, Mrs. Leverna Duesbury of Collins, Will Backous of Wetonka, S. D., Walter Backous of Omak, Wash., Arthur Backous of Ames and many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
