Obituary of Mr. M. B. O'Donnell

The entire community was grieved and shocked Saturday morning when the report went abroad that Mr. M. B. O'Donnell had passed from this life. While it was known that he was very ill with pneumonia the people in general failed to realize the seriousness of his condition.

Martin Bernard O'Donnell, son of Martin and Mary O'Donnell was born near Colo, Iowa July 11, 1872 an died after a brief illness November 20, 1915, aged 43 years, 4 months and 9 days. He was married to Mary Croker on February 16, 1898. To this union were born four sons, Harold, Clarence, Maurice and Leo who survive him and one daughter, who with her mother departed this life on August 8, 1906. Mr. O'Donnell or Mart as he was familiarly known to everyone had always been a resident in or near Colo. For several years he conducted a ---- ------- ---------- of his interests to move with this family to the old homestead where he was born.

The vast number of friends who attended the funeral services at St. Mary's church on Monday morning testified to the esteem in which he was held. Requiem High Mass was read by his pastor Rev. Nicholls and a sermon by Rev. D. Mulcahy of Vinton, who paid tribute to a boyhood playmate and a live long friend. Members of the Knights of Columbus of which he was a member attended the funeral in a body. He was laid to rest in St. James Cemetery beside his wife and daughter to await the resurrection morn.

He leaves four sons, an aged father Martin O'Donnell, a brother James and two sisters Mrs. Anna Dolan and Mrs. James McCoy besides a host of other relatives to mourn his untimely end. Out of town people in attendance at the funeral were Mrs. Margaret Tyler, Mr. Anthony Sarcone, Mr. and Mrs. John Hopkins of Des Moines, Rev. D. Mulcahy of Vinton, Mr. and Mrs. R. F. O'Donnell of Ames, Mrs. Clarence Mason of Marshalltown, Members of the Knights of Columbus from Ames and Marshalltown and a number of friends from Nevada.
