OBITUARY

SMITH CHILD

Smith M. Child, whose death was briefly mentioned last week, died March 21, at his home in Dunlap. He was born in Bath, New Hampshire, October 5, 1836, and was aged at his death 78 years, 5 months and 16 days. He was the fifth of the seven children of Mr. and Mrs. David Child, and he moved with the family in the early 50's to Peoria, Illinois, and came with them thence to Nevada in 1855. The family became at once one of the best and most favorably known in then then pioneer community. As a youth developing into manhood he bore his part in early doings. Later he went with the Pike's Peak boom to Colorado, and on his return from that expedition he left his two partners at St. Joe, they continuing southward to join the Confederate army and he coming home to enlist in the 32nd Iowa, in which he served to the end of the war. After the war and upon arrival here of the Northwestern railroad he came into the employ of the railroad, and with the extension of the road to the Missouri river, he was assigned to the charge of the station at Dunlap. By this circumstance did he become identified with the town which continued his home for life. He continued with the railroad for a few years and then engaged in livestock and other enterprise. In the Harrison administration he was post-master, and always he was a man of evident standing in his community and enjoying most hearty welcome on his return to his earlier home. He was married in Kansas in 1867 to Miss Rachel L. Trumbull, who with their two sons survives him. The sons reside respectively in California and Colorado and it is stated by the Dunlap paper that Mrs. Child will continue to occupy the homestead there.
