Funeral Services for Civil War Veteran

Special to the Journal.
Zearing, April 25--The funeral of S. A. "Abe" Stallings Civil war veteran was held at the Evangelical church Friday afternoon at two o'clock, Rev. H. E. Trimble and Rev. I. L. Baumgardner having charge of the services. The American Legion Post of this place attended in a body and took charge of the services at the Mausoleum where the body was interred beside that of his wife.

Sylvester A. Stallings was born in Logan county, Illinois May 16, 1841 and departed this life Thursday, April 21, 1927, at the Soldiers home at Marshalltown where he had entered the home ten years ago. He enlisted in Company C, Fifth Iowa Infantry, July 1, 1861 being transferred to Company I, Fifth Iowa Cavalry, Feb. 15, 1864. He receive an honorable discharge October 1, 1865. In 1866 he was united in marriage to Miss Aurilla Ufford who preceded him in death several years ago. To this union one child was born Myrtle Anna, who also preceded him in death. The nearest relatives left to mourn his loss are the two grandchildren Merle L. Ingledue and Mrs. Marie Johnson both of Cincinnati, Ohio who accompanied the body here for burial.

Mr. Stallings was a well known former resident of this place. After the death of his wife he maintained a home for his grandchildren until ten years ago when he went to the Soldiers home. As long as he was able, he was very active in the affairs in the community and took great price in his war record as well as that of his grandson Merle who is a World war veteran having been overseas. The heartfelt sympathy is extended by friends to the bereaved ones.
