OBITUARY

Wm. E. SNYDER

William E. Snyder, 33 years of age, a native of Nevada whose boyhood was spent in this city but for many years absent from his old home, was brought back here to be laid to rest on Sunday afternoon on the family lot in the Nevada cemetery. He died at Guthrie, Oklahoma, on Thursday, July 6, at the home of his brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. L. N. Fenne, and his remains were accompanied from Oklahoma by his mother, Mrs. Sophia Snyder, and by Mr. Fenne. The party were met here by two more brothers-in-law and one sister, Mrs. S. H. Carhart of Mapleton and Rev. and Mrs. E. J. G. Reid of Ashley, North Dakota. For them all it was a return after many years on a sad errand to their old home where conditions and people have so greatly changed that they could find but a limited number of their old friends to welcome them. Such as were to be found, how ever, were glad to extend sympathy and cheer. The funeral was conducted from the Methodist church Sunday afternoon by Rev. R. E. Shaw in the presence of old friends. There were flowers from the Masonic Lodge at Mapleton and the pall=bearers were from the Masonic lodge at Nevada.

The deceased was the youngest child of the late D. S. Snyder, who lived and died on the lot at the east end of the south half of the court house block and was one of the best known citizens of the town in its earlier days. After the father's death and the sale to the county of the lot, the family lived for a number of years in what is now the Bricker property. In this time Wm. E. was a boy or lad, and he was barely into his teens when the family removed to Chicago in the early '90s. Thence after about ten years they removed to Mapleton in this state, where others of the family were living and from there some half-dozen years ago to Oklahoma. In the latter state Mr. Snyder and his mother had their home near Guthrie at Crescent, where he was engaged in mercantile business. There he had last summer a siege of typhoid fever, from the effects of which he never recovered and last May his condition became such that he was taken to the Fenne house at Guthrie where he died.

Of the visiting relatives, Rev. and Mrs. Reid arrived from North Dakota Saturday evening and Mr. Carhart soon after from Mapleton. Mrs. Snyder and Mr. Fenne, with the body, arrived the same night and were entertained at the Bamberger home. All of them departed Monday morning, Mr. Carhart for the west, and the others for Des Moines, whence Mrs. Snyder and Mr. Fenne would proceed to Oklahoma, and the Reids, after a day with old friends in Dallas county, would return north. Rev. Isaiah Reid of Los Angeles is temporarily at the home of his son in North Dakota and thus has made the latter's trip to Iowa. The younger Reid is now the Methodist pastor at Ashley and his son is in charge of the schools at the same place. Mrs. Snyder was much worn by the experiences of her son's illness and death and by the journey to Iowa, and it was a matter of regret to her friends that she would not stay and rest a few days before starting back. For all the funeral party there were regrets at the occasion of their visit back home but pleasure in meeting them once again.
